Week 6: Emma and Ben

The room: Rumpus room

Cash spent: $22,269 (Budget: $10,000)

Score: 28/30 (second place)

“The green ceiling is phenomenal,” said Shaynna Blaze. “I love it. You feel like you are being hugged in this room in a really beautiful way and it’s all to do with colour.”

A modern living room featuring a large abstract painting on the wall, a brown leather sofa with cushions, an armchair, a wooden side table, and a floor lamp. A bookshelf with books and decorative items stands nearby. The room has soft lighting and curtains covering the windows.

Emma and Ben created a cocoon-like living space that combined texture with bold colour choices.

Emma and Ben created a moody, textural space in their rumpus room, designed as a second living space, with a curated, careful design that embodied rich colours and brave choices.

Sadly just pipped at the post this week, the couple went big on colour, cocooning the room with a dark and earthy olive green ceiling (‘Hidden Grove’ by British Paints) that matched the walls. A floor-to-ceiling bookcase was layered on a dark herringbone timber floor and offset with a softly textured wallpaper in a calming rose shade.

The showstopping piece was a large artwork taking centre stage, balanced by a wall-mounted TV and luxe leather lounge.

“I love the wallpaper; I love their paintwork – there is nothing to fault, even with their styling,” said Shaynna Blaze. “It is perfection.”

Darren Palmer congratulated the couple on creating a room that not only looked beautiful, but was also cost effective, choosing an affordable bookcase and using paint to create the design drama.

“This is the room to nail – and they have nailed it,” added Marty Fox.

A modern living room featuring a brown leather sofa with assorted cushions, two round wooden coffee tables, and an abstract painting on the wall. Two smaller abstract artworks hang above the sofa. A bookshelf is in the corner, and a green armchair sits to the right.

Design tip

Dark timber flooring adds an element of sophistication and elegance to a room (and can be effective at hiding dirt). Ideal for media rooms, dark floors can also absorb light and heat, which helps to make a space feel cosier and warmer.

What colour paint did they use?

The paint colour that Emma and Ben used in their rumpus room was ‘Hidden Grove’ by British Paints.
