Pantry with maximum storage

Overview

Looking for a simple way to improve your kitchen storage? Installing a pull-out pantry organiser is an easy project that can make your space more efficient and accessible. With a few common tools and a bit of patience, you can transform your pantry into a tidy, functional storage area that makes everyday items easy to find and reach.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Steps

1Remove the pantry door and shelves

Start by removing the pantry door from its hinges. Then take out any existing pantry shelves and hardware inside the cabinet. This clears the space and gives you a blank area to work with during the installation.

2Pre-drill the holes in the cabinet

Using a 2mm drill bit, mark and pre-drill four holes into the top panel of your pantry cabinet. Repeat the same process for the bottom panel. Refer to your pantry storage kit’s instructions for the correct measurements and placement - this ensures your runners and brackets will be positioned accurately.

3Remove the screws from the brackets

Take the runners from your kit and locate the flat-head screws on each bracket. Remove two screws from each bracket to prepare for attaching the L-Irons.

4Fix the L-Irons to the runners

Slide the runners back and forth to expose the screw holes. Position the L-Irons over the brackets, then screw through the runners into the L-Irons using the screws you just removed. This step secures the brackets to the runners and forms the base of your pantry pull-out frame.

5Install the runners in the base of the cabinet

Carefully line up the runners with the pre-drilled holes at the base of your pantry cabinet. Fix them in place with four wood screws. Then, add eight additional screws, spaced evenly along each runner to ensure a strong and secure fit. Check that the runners are positioned as mirror images of each other on either side of the cabinet.

6Fix the U-Iron to the top of the cabinet

Move to the top panel of your pantry cabinet and position the U-Iron so it lines up with the pre-drilled holes. Screw it into place securely as this will act as the upper guide rail for your pull-out frame. Go back to the L-Bracket at the rear of the internal frame. Loosen the screws slightly and adjust the bracket until the castors slot smoothly into the U-Iron above. Once aligned, tighten the screws again to lock the frame firmly in place.

7Slide on the protective covers

With the runners firmly installed, slide the protective covers over them. These covers help keep the mechanism clean and provide a tidy, finished look inside the cabinet.

8Prepare and attach the door rack

Lay your pantry door flat on a clean, soft surface to avoid scratches. Using a tape measure and pencil, draw two vertical lines on the back. One at approximately 80mm from the edge, and another line 315mm further across. From the bottom of the door, mark out drill points at 110mm and 166mm along both lines. Drill shallow pilot holes at these points, then align the vertical door rack panels and screw them into place.

9Reattach the door and fix the connecting strips

Once the rack is fitted, reattach the pantry door to the cabinet. Then fix the connecting strips that link the door rack to the internal frame. One end of each strip should be secured to the frame, and the other to the top of the door rack. This ensures the two sections move in sync when you open and close the door.

10Insert the wire baskets

Now add the wire baskets. Start by inserting the support pegs evenly into the holes in both the door rack and internal frame. Press them down gently to lock them in place. Fit the smaller baskets onto the door rack and the larger ones onto the internal frame. Take a moment to check that all baskets sit level and securely.

Health & Safety

Please make sure you use all equipment appropriately and safely when following the advice in these D.I.Y. videos. You need to be familiar with how to use equipment safely and follow the instructions that came with the equipment. If you are unsure, you may feel it is safest to consult an expert, such as the manufacturer or an expert Bunnings Team Member.

Grave health hazards are linked to asbestos, which may be in homes built up to 1990. Health hazards may result from exposure to lead-based paints in older materials and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer.
