Week 3: Emma and Ben

The room: Main ensuite

Score: 28/30 (second place)

“It’s absolute heaven to walk in here and see Emma and Ben embrace the boldness of Daylesford,” says Shaynna Blaze. “This is magical.”

Modern bathroom with double round sinks on a wooden vanity, large mirror, maroon tiled walls, and partial view of a glass shower.
A rich colour palette combined with luxurious brass accessories created a magical bathroom for Emma and Ben

Emma and Ben’s bathroom displayed a courageous choice of colour. With a dark burgundy as the base shade, the Victorian couple created a rich and opulent space for their master ensuite. Floor-to-ceiling finger tiles (“this tile colour is really sophisticated,” said Darren Palmer) in two shades of lush red wrapped the space, offset by luxurious brass tapware and a timber vanity. The finishing touch was a textural wallpaper, also in a dark red.

Modern bathroom with wooden vanity, oval sink, brass fixtures, glass shower, maroon tiles, towel racks, and skylight.

The couple decided not to include a bath in their design, instead opting for a generously sized double shower, with a curved glass shower screen dividing the open wet area from the rest of the space. “Look at the size of this shower,” marvelled Marty Fox. “This is what buyers want.”

Horizontal brass towel rails completed the space, winning praise from the judges, who lauded Emma and Ben for the practicality of the design.

The quality of the work was also a winner, with Marty Fox commenting on the fact that as experienced renovators, Emma and Ben know how to plan and then execute their design to a high standard.

Design tip

Consistency of tapware helps to make a space look considered and coherent. Choose basin mixers in the same design and profile as the shower taps for a stronger design statement.

What colour paint did they use?

The colour that Emma and Ben used in their main ensuite was White Comfort by British Paints
