How to make a hula hoop

Overview

Making your own colourful hula hoop is a fun and easy project. With just a few simple materials, you can create a custom hula hoop that’s perfect for hours of twirling fun or you can try a hula hoop for dancing. Whether you’re looking for an activity to do together or just want to make something unique, this DIY project is sure to be a hit.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Steps

1Decide How Big Your Hula Hoop Will Be

First, decide on your hula hoop sizehow big you want your hula hoop to be. To find the right size, grab your garden tube and hold it up against your body while it’s standing on its side. A good size for your hoop is somewhere between your waist and chest. Once you’ve measured it, ask an adult to cut the tube to the correct length for you.

2Connect the Tube

Now it’s time to turn your tube into a hoop. Take a connector and insert it halfway into one end of the tube. Then, join the other end of the tube to the connector to create a full circle. Make sure the ends are pushed firmly onto the connector so it holds together securely.

3Add Some Noise

If you’d like your hula hoop to make funny noises while you twirl it, this is the time to add some rice. Use a paper funnel (or a different one you have at home) to pour a small amount of rice into the tube before you close it up. The rice will rattle as you spin the hoop, making it extra fun to use!

4Secure the Join

To make sure your hula hoop stays together, wrap some colourful tape around the join where the tube meets the connector. Wrap the tape tightly, going around several times to hold everything firmly in place.

5Decorate Your Hula Hoop

Now for the fun part – decorating! Use colourful tape or contact paper to make your hula hoop look amazing. You can create patterns, add stripes, or mix and match colours. You can be more creative by using fairy lights or flowers to make floral hula hoops. Get creative and make your hoop as unique as you are!

6Give It a Spin

Once your hula hoop is ready, it’s time to test it out. Give it a big twirl and see how many spins you can do. You can even try twirling it on your arm or around your leg for an extra challenge!
