In this article, we’re focusing on Urban Edge. It’s a minimalist style that’s equal parts sleek and functional. This pared-down look is characterised by:

  • A calming palette of warm whites and soft greys, grounded by black accents for contrast and definition.
  • Brushed chrome and stainless-steel accents introduce a modern edge and elevate the space with refined metallic detail.
  • Grounded with matte, textured ceramics that bring a sense of raw character.
  • Smart, innovative storage solutions designed to simplify everyday life.
  • Playful graphics and custom artwork bring personality, with a bold pop of colour as a focal point.
  • Intuitive tech that complements workflow.

Far from ‘safe or ‘boring’, these elements offer longevity and a versatile foundation for your modern kitchen.

What is Urban Edge?

Unlike maximalist or traditional styles, Urban Edge keeps things simple, as the name suggests. But this doesn’t mean the absence of design. The aim is to avoid decorating with unnecessary details as the beauty is the design itself. This style champions warm whites and soft greys with black accents for a clean, pulled-together and well-ordered look, while it uses metallic accents sparingly to take the home’s central hub from humble to luxe. Natural elements such as timber and greenery bring warmth and softness. Urban Edge is smart, too. It incorporates an ergonomic galley-style layout, thoughtful storage and the latest technology.

Key elements of an Urban Edge kitchen

To pull off this design in your cook space, you’ll need a few essential ingredients.

Colour palette

The contemporary achromatic colour scheme has perennial appeal as it lets you accessorise easily over the years. It’s a minimal approach that creates an airy atmosphere and makes the room feel larger. Sophisticated shades of white and grey take centre stage. Warmer tones of off-white and light greys are used liberally to soften and personalise the space. And a coat of white paint on the walls is the cure for a dark or windowless area as white bounces light around. You can open up the area further by choosing a slightly lighter paint shade for the upper cabinets. To avoid stark contrasts that can date, black is limited to carefully curated decor.

Cabinetry and layout

Tidy closed cabinets keep surfaces clutter free and are favoured over open shelves, which are reserved for only a few display-worthy wares. As ornamentation is rejected, flat-fronted cabinetry is used to create a soothing, seamless effect. Cabinetry is extended vertically to increase storage and visually heighten the space. These cabinets are perfect for integrating fridges and undermount rangehoods that can interrupt flow. And while handless cabinets using push-to-release catches are authentically minimalist, geometric silver hardware added to drawers let materiality shine.

With no troublesome corners to configure, a one wall galley-style layout with an island bench ensures efficiency. To make this train-like design work, make sure the island is the same height as the benchtops. The beauty of this modern linear plan is that it still keeps the stove, sink and fridge zones within close range, allowing you to minimise movement as you prep, cook and clean up. Proximity saves time! Centre a deep square sink on the bench to leave work space on either side.

Materials and textures

As simplicity is key to this design, materials matter. They should be durable, easy to clean, visually engaging and tempting to touch. The idea is to enhance the space without overpowering it – there is no need to embellish. Juxtapose low-maintenance matt walls and cabinets with a sleek metallic splashback. It adds a reflective dimension, highlighting understated decor. Concrete, stone and glass also feature for their cool, contemporary beauty. A concrete-inspired benchtop, black glass stovetop and greige stone floor synchronise perfectly. For a dose of warmth, opt for timber floors.

Finishes

Carefully selected finishes can make a minimalist kitchen feel warm and connected. Choose matt or low-sheen walls, ceilings and cabinet finishes, and avoid harsh high-gloss ones, to bring softness and cosiness to the space. When adding metallics in your splashback, tapware, cabinetry hardware and appliances, opt for the subtle sheen of a brushed stainless-steel finish. Layer in natural timber and stone floors to strike the right note. For a low-maintenance floor option, consider vinyl ‘timber’, which is totally waterproof and quiet under foot. Just what a serene cooking zone needs.

Lighting

Lighting is the icing on the cake and will make a difference to how a minimalist kitchen feels and functions. Optimise warm natural sunlight with large windows and glass doors (sans the plantation shutters). If windows are lacking, consider a skylight. Reflective metallic or mirrored accents also brighten the space. After sundown, avoid relying on overhead fixtures as they can cause harsh shadows and insufficient task lighting. Instead, use a strategic mix of ambient (recessed), task (under-cabinet LED strip) and accent (toe-kicking LED strip) lighting. Select unobtrusive fixtures to show off negative space. For flexibility, install dimmers, which let you adjust brightness according to the time of day and activity.

Decor and styling

Less is more in this stripped-down scheme so remove all non-essential appliances from the benchtop – the waffle maker doesn’t cut it as decor! You want the eyes to have less to focus on. This is where black accents come in. Stick to a few carefully chosen details. Curate vignettes on your benchtop and open shelving with onyx-hued ceramics. Grouped objects of varying heights challenge the kitchen’s straight lines. Remember, functionality is key to this design so decorative items should be useful.

Layer in darker greys with kitchen linen featuring linear patterns for continuity. Prioritise plants as a calming biophilic element to connect this busy workspace to nature. Living, breathing greenery in a dynamic, modern space creates balance and purifies the air. Place a small pothos, peace lily, aloe vera, or any other striking plant in a corner or at the end of a benchtop to soften hard edges. A bowl of fresh citrus has the same effect and adds a pop of colour.

Furniture and key details

In line with the Urban Edge credo, every piece of furniture should be necessary for the space. Open-frame or backless bar stools will keep the layout feeling breathable and make the room look bigger as your eyes move through the stools. They also allow more light into the space. To complement the scheme, choose geometric-style stools with sleek black steel frames and fabric-upholstered seats in a solid neutral colour. Clear or smoke transparent acrylic stools would also work well. An achromatic design makes it easy to update other key details in the future. For instance, an inexpensive laminate benchtop can be a great place keeper while you save for that gorgeous solid surface tabletop you’ve had your eye on.

Smart features also make this modern space more efficient and user-friendly. Smart appliances like ovens with Wi-Fi connectivity, voice-activated assistants and fridges that manage grocery lists streamline the workflow.

Bring Urban Edge kitchen to life

Urban Edge is the key to a stylishly tranquil cooking space. The focus is on clean lines, smart storage and an achromatic palette, complemented by strategic use of texture and accents to add depth. It’s right at home in a petite but powerful galley-style kitchen or even an expansive chef-approved zone built for hosting.
