The 2 key considerations for a vanity unit are how much space you have and who'll be using it. Start by creating a floorplan of your bathroom, measuring each of the walls, doorways and windows. Make sure to include the shower, bath and toilet and any other cupboards or fixed features you have.
Make sure you have room for the vanity doors and drawers to open and to easily walk past it. Try to avoid narrow gaps between the walls and your vanity unit as they make cleaning difficult. You also need to keep it away from the shower or bath to prevent water damage.
Replacing an existing vanity is easier if you choose a vanity that fits with the existing plumbing, which can limit your options. If you're building a new bathroom, choose your vanity and other bathroom elements at the design stage to ensure you get the right plumbing in the right areas.
We recommend speaking to a licenced plumber before buying any plumbing items to ensure you get the right products that can be installed correctly.
Freestanding vanities are best for a quick bathroom makeover, where existing pipework can be accommodated and concealed in the wall or the floor.
Wall-mounted vanities are popular in smaller bathrooms as they have a sleek, modern look and create an illusion of more floor space. They are also perfect for taller families because wall mounted vanities can be installed at a comfortable height for everyone.
Most bathroom vanities come with a benchtop and basin built in, but there are some custom options such as the 'Glee Vanity' with the choice of a white or black basin. If you want something even more unique, you can choose from our wide range of kitchen benchtops for your vanity. A stone or solid surface benchtop would look great with one of our vessel basins.
There are a few additional features you can choose to enhance the look and functionality of your vanity, including taps, which are sold separately. You'll find a large range of taps at Bunnings to suit every style and budget.
For vanities in kids bathrooms or powder rooms you can install a bathroom mirror on the wall above the vanity. In busy bathrooms and ensuites, a mirrored shaving cabinet offers more storage and can be recessed in the wall for a more contemporary look.
