How to install a retractable clothesline

Attaching the universal bracket to the post of a retractable clothesline.

Overview

A retractable clothesline is a great option if you don't have a lot of space as it can be folded away when not in use. We show you how to fix the unit to a fence, install the end post and attach the bracket to hold the clothesline in place.

Steps

1Mark the clothesline position on your fence

First choose a position for your clothesline. Make sure it is at a height people can reach and that you are screwing into a rail. To find the rail just look for the holes made by the nails. Use your spirit level to mark a straight, level line along the rail.

2Measure out the clothesline

Measure the distance between the two screw holes on the unit. Then mark the correct distance along the line you have made on the fence.

3Pre-drill the holes and attach the clothesline

Pre-drill the holes into your fence. Then use the impact driver to put the screws in place. Then line up your unit with the screws and hang it on the fence.

4Position the end post

Measure how far you want to extend the clothesline out from the fence. Mark the ground at your endpoint. So that the clothesline runs parallel, we have taken a measurement from the fence to the centre of the unit then marked out the same distance at the post end.

5Measure the post hole

To work out the depth of your hole, rest the post up against the unit on the fence. Measure the length from the top of the post down to the middle of the unit. This is how deep you need to dig the hole.

6Dig your post hole and concrete it in place

Dig the hole and put the post in the hole. Check the depth is correct with your tape measure. Then use quick set concrete to secure the post. Use the spirit level to make sure post is straight. When concrete is set backfill the hole with dirt.

7Attach the hooks to the universal bracket

Check the unit for correct positioning of the hooks so they don't interfere with the lines. Then screw the hooks in place.

8Attach the universal bracket to the post

Attach the universal bracket to the post and check that it's straight with your level. Now pull the clothes line out and attach it to the post. To take up any slack, make sure you lock it back at the unit.
