How to create a bed tray

Overview

Make breakfast in bed even cosier with your very own bed tray! This simple D.I.Y. project takes some pine and paint and transforms it into a wonderful bed tray, perfect for stacks of pancakes, bacon and eggs and glasses of fresh juice.

This versatile tray also works as a laptop holder, meaning however you spend your snoozy days, you’ll have a tray to rest everything on.

All you’ll need for this project is a few easy-to-find D.I.Y. materials and tools, most of which you might already have at home.

Steps

1Measure and mark

Using your tape measure and pencil, measure and mark the pine panel at 50cm long. Put on ear muffs, a dust mask and safety glasses and clamp the panel to your work surface to make it easier.

2Cut the timber

Cut at the mark using a circular saw.

3Sand the edges

Lightly sand the cut edge with sandpaper and a sanding block.

4Apply chalked paint

Lay down a drop sheet or protective material over your work surfaces. Keeping your dust mask and safety glasses on, spray the cut board with chalked paint.

5Brush the wet paint

Then, use a paint brush to brush over the wet paint, giving it that white-washed look.

6Leave to dry

Allow the paint on the pine panel to dry.

Tip: You can use stain, varnish or paint – it’s totally up to you and the desired look you’re after.

7Position the legs

Once the panel is dry, position the legs on each corner, marking where the nails will go with a pencil.

8Final assembly

Screw in your legs using your drill and screws. Once secure, turn over to enjoy your bed tray!
