Overview

Make a beautiful light-up decoration for your garden. Get the kids involved in this fun D.I.Y. that will get their creative hats on and keep them entertained!

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment

Steps

1Pick your design and decorate your pot

First up, get brainstorming and think of what you’d like your pot to look like! To get your creative juices flowing, think about fun patterns like stripes, swirls or dots. Maybe you’d like to challenge yourself to make your terracotta pot look like an animal, bug or flower! You could also think about what your favourite things are like a fluffy cloud or a magical fairy. Put your thinking hat on and let’s get creative - the possibilities are endless!

Once you’ve picked out your design, take a pencil and sketch it out on your pot. Or you can go ahead and dip your paintbrush or sponge into some colours and paint it directly on to the pot! Just remember to have your pot upside down with the hole on top, so that your design faces that way.

2Prepare the solar lights

Once your pot has finished drying, it’s time to put your solar light in! Your solar light will have a small solar panel at the top that collects energy from the sun to power your light at night. Line up your solar light with the pot’s hole and place it inside, so that the panel is facing up towards the sky.

3Add finishing decorations

Once you’ve added your solar light, it’s time to add your finishing decorations to your pot. You can use stickers, glitter, gems, sequins, waterproof paint markers and anything else you can find to make it look extra special.

4Place your pot in your garden

Now for the exciting part! Take your pot outside and find a nice spot to put it in. This might be near a tree, a fishpond or next to some pot plants.

Have fun watching your beautiful pot light up at night and make your garden look fabulous!

5Keep in mind...

Make sure the glue and paint you’re using for your decorations are waterproof because your pot will be going into the garden, and it might rain!
