How to make a popsicle stick character

To create the base of your Halloween character, take six wooden popsicle sticks and lay one down horizontally. Line up the remaining five popsicle sticks on top, making sure they are even and neat! Then take some craft glue and dab a tiny bit of it onto the back of each popsicle stick to glue it to the one you laid down. It’s going to look a little bit like a mini fence! Once you’ve glued each stick down, let it dry completely.

After your popsicle base has dried, get an adult to help you trim the popsicle ends hanging on each side so you’re left with a rectangular base.

Now it’s time to get your Halloween creativity hat on. Depending on which Halloween character you pick, choose some colours that you think will look nice and spooky! For our example, we’ve chosen white for the ghost, orange for the pumpkin, black for the cat and red for the witch. You don’t have to stick to these colours or characters - you could also go for a skeleton, a zombie, a bat, a vampire or anything else you can think of! Once you’ve chosen your colours, paint your popsicle stick base and allow it to dry.

After your pop stick base has dried, it’s time to decorate! Here’s a simple guide for each stick character to help get you started:

For the Ghost: Cut a mouth shape out of black paper for eyes, and a mouth, and stick them on with craft glue. You can also use googly eyes, paint or markers instead. If you’re looking for some extra glitz, you can finish it off with some spooky silver glitter!

For the Pumpkin: Using green craft paper and a pair of scissors, cut out a V-shape to create a pumpkin stem. Take some black paper to cut out two triangles for eyes and a smaller one for the nose. Lastly, cut out a zig zag shape to make a big jagged smile. You can also use stickers, markers or more paint to create the features of your pumpkin.

For the Cat: Take some coloured craft paper and some scissors to cut out two triangles for your cat’s ears and use some glue to stick these on top of your popsicle base. Then you can stick some googly eyes on or if you don’t have any, use some green or yellow paper to cut out two eye or diamond shapes to create the eyes. Draw on some pupils and stick the eyes on with some glue. Attach a button or pom-pom for a nose and glue down some pipe cleaners for whiskers.

For the Witch: The popsicle base will form the witch’s dress colour. Pick a colour you want her skin to be and cut a circle shape to create her face. Then you can cut out a triangle for her hat - you can pick the same colour as her dress or a different one for this! Stick the face and hat on with some craft glue and then do the same with some googly eyes. Use stickers, paper or markers to add on her nose and a smile! Finally, add some detail to her dress by glueing down some buttons or pompoms. You can also make some accessories for her, like a broom!

The last step is to glue down each end of a pipe cleaner or some twine to create a loop at the top of your popsicle stick character. Once this is fully dry, you can hang up your Halloween popsicle character as a decoration!

You definitely don’t have to stick to Halloween characters, you can easily update these for Christmas, Easter or a fun birthday party activity for the kids.
