Decorated doormats with colours and textures

Overview

Making your very own personalised doormat is a fun and creative D.I.Y. project that adds a personal touch to your home, cubby house or even bedroom.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Steps

1Prepare your workspace

Before you start, lay down a plastic sheet or some newspaper to protect your table or floor from paint. Once your workspace is ready, place your coir mat in the centre. This will be the blank canvas for your design.

2Plan your design

Think about how you’d like your doormat to look. You can use letter stencils to create words or patterns, or you can come up with your own design. If you’re not sure, you can practise your design on some paper first to get it just right. This is your chance to get creative, so have fun.

3Paint your doormat

Now it’s time to bring your design to life. Use dabber sponge brushes or paint brushes to carefully apply the acrylic paint onto the mat. If you’re using stencils, hold them firmly in place while you paint to keep the design sharp. Add as many colours and patterns as you like – the more creative, the better.

4Get creative with your design

Instead of sticking to brushes and stencils, why not try painting with your hands? Dip your palms, fingers, or even sponges into your acrylic paint and create playful patterns, abstract designs, or even handprint art. This personal touch will make your doormat truly one-of-a-kind.

Feel free to experiment with colours and textures. If you’re working with kids, this step can be a great way to involve them in the project and let their imaginations run wild. Just be sure to wipe your hands clean between colours to keep the design crisp.

Once you’ve finished painting, leave your mat to dry completely.

Health & Safety

Please make sure you use all equipment appropriately and safely when following the advice in these D.I.Y. videos. You need to be familiar with how to use equipment safely and follow the instructions that came with the equipment. If you are unsure, you may feel it is safest to consult an expert, such as the manufacturer or an expert Bunnings Team Member.

Grave health hazards are linked to asbestos, which may be in homes built up to 1990. Health hazards may result from exposure to lead-based paints in older materials and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer.
