Five homemade D.I.Y. Mother’s Day gifts
Turn an empty fence, wall or outdoor corner into a fun feature with a D.I.Y. chalkboard wall. Whether it’s used for party menus, backyard games or everyday notes, it’s a simple upgrade that adds personality to outdoor entertainment areas spaces of all sizes.
Select a smooth MDF panel for an even painting surface. MDF board works well with chalkboard paint and creates a clean finish. Choose a size that suits the space, whether it’s a large feature panel for a backyard fence or a smaller board for a courtyard or balcony. Boards can be cut to size in-store to suit the area.
For best results, install MDF in a covered or semi-covered outdoor area. If the board will be fully exposed to weather, consider using an exterior-rated board instead
Wipe the MDF surface with a clean cloth to remove dust. If the edges feel rough from cutting, lightly smooth them with fine sandpaper. Place the board on a protected surface with a drop sheet.
Apply a suitable primer to the entire board, including the front, back and all edges. MDF edges are porous, so make sure they are thoroughly sealed. Sealing all sides helps protect the board from moisture and improves durability.
Once the primer is fully dry, apply chalkboard paint to the front surface using a paint roller in smooth, even strokes. Two thin coats usually provide solid coverage, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next. Allow the final coat to dry completely before handling or installing.
Position the finished board against the fence or wall and check that it is level before securing. For timber fences, use exterior screws and a drill to fix the board into fence rails or posts. For brick or masonry surfaces, use appropriate wall plugs and masonry fixings. Ensure the board is firmly attached with no movement.
Once mounted, use paint pens or a fine brush to create a decorative border around the edge of the board. A simple outline can frame the chalkboard and give it a finished look. Small corner details or a painted heading at the top can also add personality.
Wipe the board clean with a damp cloth and allow to dry before writing on it. Over time, a fresh coat of chalkboard paint can revive the surface if needed, keeping your D.I.Y. outdoor chalkboard looking its best.
