Bluey craft: How to make flappy the butterfly

Overview

Remember the endearing Flappy from children’s TV series, Bluey? The cute caterpillar who was rescued by Bingo and Lily after crawling onto their waterslide in season three, and returned as a beautiful blue butterfly later in the extended “The Sign”. As we celebrate the arrival of some fun Bluey-inspired decor items at Bunnings, it’s time to bring a special part of Bluey into your own household with this cute flappy design Bluey craft project the kids will love. It’s time to get weaving - for real life!

    Steps

    1Prepare and start weaving your Bluey craft

    Overlap your sticks to make an ‘X’ shape and use your first yarn colour to weave around the middle to keep them in place. Then, wind the yarn from side to side and top to bottom a few times. When you’re ready, tie the first colour of yarn to the end of your second colour of yarn.

    2Weave three different colours of yarn to make Flappy’s wings

    Next, weave over and under the sticks to make the first wing. Then, tie your third length of yarn to the end of your second colour and continue weaving until you get to the end of your wing. Tie off the end by threading the yarn through a piece you have already weaved and knot it. Tuck the tail into the wing before repeating on the other side.

    3Use pipe cleaners to make Flappy’s body

    Fold your pipe cleaner around the centre of the ‘X’ shape, leaving the long two ends of the pipe cleaner at the top and a little room at the bottom. Next, start twisting the pipe cleaner on both sides to keep it in place. Finally, thread 1 large bead onto the top and 1 onto the bottom. This will form the body, head and base of your Flappy.

    4Add some beads for the finishing touches

    Now, curl up the antenna and put two beads on each end. If you can’t find beads in your favourite colours, you can paint them. Add one more bead to the tail and you’re done!

    5Keep in mind…

  • Children must be supervised at all times when crafting. These projects are not suitable for children under three years old.
  • Keep dangling decorations out of reach of small children and pets when crafting and using beads and other small items.
