Week 5: Britt and Taz

The room: Living and dining spaces

Cash spent: $33,585 (Budget: $20,000)

Score: 28.5/30 (second place)

“It’s perfectly appropriate for the region,” Shaynna Blaze said, about the panelled ceiling. “It’s something that you would come to Daylesford for. It has that beautiful feeling about it.”

A modern living room with a high wooden ceiling and a large chandelier. The space includes a white and beige sectional sofa with pillows, an armchair draped with a blanket, and two small round stools. A fireplace on the right is framed by stacked firewood, candles, and an octagonal mirror above. The back wall features two paintings flanking a central TV displaying flowers. The left wall is clad in textured stone.

A spectacular ceiling of timber battens cocooned the living and dining spaces of Britt and Taz’s home to great effect.

Britt and Taz have continued their successful run with a beautifully designed living and dining space using the same warm tones and “country vibe” as they called it, chosen for the rest of the house.

It’s been great seeing police officer Taz continue to build on his new building skills, especially when equipped with his new tool belt courtesy of Scotty Cam.

The couple made the decision to panel the entire ceiling of House 3 in timber (even the skylights) for a warm, cocooning effect, adding in lots of warm textures throughout the space – textured paint, travertine flooring (with underfloor heating), and a stone feature wall behind the fireplace.

A pale timber dining table, chairs and custom-made bench complemented the ceiling without drawing attention away from it, as did the pale stone chosen for the feature wall next to the fireplace.

“The attention to detail and the palette is just gorgeous,” said Darren Palmer. “This house is starting to feel really beautifully meshed together.”

A dining room featuring a wooden table set for six, with plates, glasses, napkins, candles, and a central vase of flowers. The space is illuminated by natural light through large windows with sheer white curtains. A hanging light fixture is suspended from the wooden-paneled ceiling, and a light-colored rug lies beneath the dining set.

Design tip

Underfloor heating is an economical and effective way of heating a large room, and is especially easy to do in a new build, either before the concrete slab is poured, or under tiles, as Britt and Taz have done.

What colour paint did they use?

The paint colour that Britt and Taz used in their living and dining rooms was ‘Colorbond Paperbark’.
