How to install window film

Overview

If you’re looking for more privacy or want to reduce glare in your home, window film is a simple and effective solution. It’s easy to apply, and the result is a neat, modern finish that transforms your windows. Follow these steps for a top quality finish.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Steps

1Clean the window

Start by giving your window a thorough clean. Use window cleaner and a lint-free cloth to remove any dust, dirt, or grime. This ensures the privacy window film will stick properly and prevents peeling in the future.

2Measure the window

Next, measure the dimensions of your window using a measuring tape. Transfer those measurements onto the window tint film. To make installation easier, add an extra 25mm of overhang around the edges, which you can trim off later.

3Cut the window film

Carefully cut the window tint film to the size you marked using scissors or a utility knife. Make sure to include the 25mm overhang for flexibility during application.

4Apply the window film

Spray the window lightly with window film application solution or soapy water. This will make it easier to position the film and remove air bubbles.

5Spray both sides of the film

Once you’ve peeled the backing off the window film, it’s time to spray. Lightly mist both sides of the film with your window film solution. This step is essential as it helps prevent the film from sticking too quickly, allowing you to position it more accurately on the glass.

6Secure the film

Starting from the top of the window, press the adhesive side of the film onto the glass. Use your hands to gently smooth it down as you work your way to the bottom.

7Remove air bubbles

Once the film is in place, spray more solution over the top. Use a squeegee to remove air bubbles by working from the centre outwards. This step helps ensure a smooth, bubble-free finish.

8Trim the edges

When the privacy window film is properly positioned and smoothed, use a utility knife to trim off the excess film. Leave a small 2mm gap around the edges to allow any remaining solution to escape.

Finally, use the squeegee or a cloth to remove any leftover moisture or air bubbles. Once the window is completely dry, your window film should be securely in place and looking great.

9Keep in mind...

  • Work in a cool, shaded area to prevent the solution from drying too quickly during application.
  • If stubborn bubbles remain, try lifting the edge of the film and applying more solution before smoothing it down again.
