Overview

Everyone needs a functional wardrobe. It's the foundation of your clothing system and a key part of your daily routine. Revamping your wardrobe can be fun and exciting D.I.Y. project. We've created a guide on how to create the ultimate wardrobe space. With these tips, anyone can personalise their wardrobe to make it more functional and organised.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, ear muffs, gloves and mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Steps

1Wardrobe 1: The adaptable wardrobe for kids

With children’s wardrobes, we want to create something functional that can also grow with them as they get older. Check out our tips on what to consider when designing your child’s wardrobe.

  • Plan for clutter and change: With children, it's easy to quickly accumulate a lot of clothes and toys. It’s important to plan for where clothes and toys will go and to allow for flexibility as they grow older and their interests change.
  • Storage placement: Placing everyday items and clothing on lower levels helps encourage kids to be more independent throughout the dressing process.
  • Storage baskets: Putting toys away in baskets helps you stay more organised and makes it easier to keep space clutter-free. Placing storage baskets at a low level means that kids can easily take what they want, and it’s a great way to encourage them to take ownership in putting things away after toy-time, too. 
  • Patterned wallpaper: Fun and engaging wallpaper is a great way to add a personalised feel, while stimulating their imagination.

2Wardrobe 2: The generic built-in wardrobe

Transforming a plain, generic, built-in wardrobe is one of the more challenging wardrobe makeovers, and is a common problem when you move into a new place or if you live in an apartment. However, there is so much you can do to make the space your own. If you need a little inspo, this makeover is for you!

  • Storage options and organisation: Remove the original hanging rail and add in some shelving towers. By updating the inner shelves, you can instantly elevate the space and help with organisation and personalisation. You can also customise the shelving units however you like.
  • Maximise space: Try adding a double hanging rail to better utilise the space.
  • Display your favourite items: Add a backing plate and brackets to customise how you display your favourite feature items, like bags or shoes.
  • Elevate with lighting: If you want to add a little something extra, consider adding some LED strip lights to highlight your feature items.

3Wardrobe 3: The ultimate walk-in wardrobe

The ultimate walk-in wardrobe is affordable, functional and luxe at the same time. One of the best things about this particular wardrobe style is that every single inch of space is utilised, including the corners.

  • Versatile shoe rack: Opt for a stylised and functional shoe rack that will accommodate multiple styles and sizes of shoe.
  • Utilise corners: A double hanging unit helps you utilise every inch of your wardrobe, making the most space of each corner.
  • Multi-storage units: Multi-storage units are great for their function and flexibility. The one we’ve chosen has adjustable shelves and standard and jumbo drawers.
  • Functional benchtop: A benchtop in your wardrobe provides you with a space to sort and fold your clothing before putting it away. You can also display items that showcase your personal style here!
  • Luxurious lighting: Lastly, think about the lighting in your wardrobe. Lighting not only serves the functional purpose of helping you find the items you need, it also brings a luxurious feel to the space. We’ve opted for motion-sensor, battery powered lights that are affordable and easy to install.

And there you have it: three different functional, affordable, D.I.Y. wardrobes!

Grave health hazards are linked to asbestos, which may be in homes built up to 1990. Health hazards may result from exposure to lead-based paints in older materials and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer. You can also use a simple test kit from Bunnings to indicate the presence of lead-based paint.
