Home Ground Heroes is back for 2024!

Our community initiative, Home Ground Heroes is to acknowledge the unsung heroes in the Touch community who go above the call of duty to enable players and the sport to thrive. As part of Bunnings sponsorship of Touch NZ, we are excited to be celebrating these ‘Home Ground Heroes' who make a meaningful difference to the Touch community.

Home Ground Heroes is an initiative that identifies those who show an extra level of commitment and effort in the Touch community. They are the ones who wrangle the whānau together, are always the first to call uniform orders and constantly on the recruitment drive to train new talent.

From January 30 until March 10, you're invited to nominate your Home Ground Hero and share why they should be selected. Five successful recipients will each be awarded $5,000 to reinvest into their Touch community.

2023 Home Ground Heroes Winners

Last season, five winners were selected from 168 nominations from across Aotearoa, demonstrating the number of unsung heroes throughout the Touch community who have had a positive impact on the game. Each winner received $5,000 to reinvest back into their Touch modules and community.

Touch NZ Chief Executive, Joe Sprangers, said, “We were blown away by the nominations and while it’s never easy choosing just five winners, we are excited to celebrate this year’s Home Ground Heroes. The response from the Touch community to shed light on all the work these heroes do, speaks volumes about the people and game we love.”

Edie-May Johnson from Counties Manukau

For the last thirteen years, Edie-May’s XLR8 Sports Touch module in East Tamaki has been keeping her community fit and tightly knit. She has worked tirelessly to make XLR8 a cost-effective and community focused sports hub, running free events, with no obligation to pay fees for kids and touch equipment. She established a whānau grade to get adults involved and is incredibly enthusiastic about getting new people into the sport.

This season, the Bunnings team is looking forward to joining the Touch community to cheer from the sidelines at Touch tournaments nationwide.

Three marquee tournaments are on the Touch NZ calendar this season:

  • 2024 Bunnings National Youth Touch Championship

  • 2024 Bunnings National Touch Championship

Bunnings continues to support the development of new coaches across the motu as Major Partner of the Online Coaching Course and sponsor of coaching equipment to successful Online Coaching Course participants. Since 2018, Bunnings has supported more than 2,800 new coaches who are the backbone of the sport and critical to growing a fun, inclusive and balanced game for tamariki and rangitahi.

We are excited to further our commitment to supporting the Touch NZ community this season. Making a positive difference in the Touch community is just a small way Bunnings can lend a hand to the communities in which we operate.
