New Zealand welcomes up to 1500 refugees every year with the support of the New Zealand Red Cross 'Pathways to Settlement' programme.
Before the families can be resettled, local agencies and community groups work together to provide a fully furnished home, secure employment and to help orientate the families into the local community.
Ali Shaukat and Asfa Maubarik fled Pakistan in 2017 and spent five years in Sri Lanka as refugees before arriving in New Zealand in March with their two children, Maria (four-years-old) and Abrish (two-years-old). The family settled into Masterton in May.
Trained Red Cross refugee support volunteers and regional community settlement staff have become a strong family link for Ali, Asfa and their two children. “I couldn’t believe the house was completely set up with all essential items, from furniture to a bowl full of fruit,” said Ali. “Thanks to New Zealand Red Cross and everyone who supported us. It made us feel like we are back among family.”
The family's local Bunnings store also provided support by donating house-hold necessities, such as kitchen and bathroom supplies, electrical products and other essential items. “The team is grateful to play a role in welcoming families into our community,” said Mark Hopwood, Bunnings Area Manager.
