Project Overview

Coastal homes are often exposed to harsh elements like wind, rain, sun and sand, which can all damage your exterior surfaces. We’ll show you how to look after your home’s exterior metal work and wood work and how to choose the right painting materials.
Continue to step-by-step instructions

Step by Step Instructions

1 Look after the exterior metal work
2 Paint to protect your home
3 Apply a polyurethane to your timber
4 Choose the best painting equipment
5 Keep your painted surfaces clean
6 Look after your woodwork
  • Step 1. Look after the exterior metal work

It’s easy to restore, maintain and protect any steel or metal that is part of your house. Different primers and products will help you prevent rust, as well as act as a good base before you add a top coat of paint.

  • Step 2. Paint to protect your home

For weatherboard or concrete masonry block homes, it’s important to use a good exterior paint. This is your best defence against elements such as sun, wind, rain and even sand and salt spray from the coast.

  • Step 3. Apply a polyurethane to your timber

When your property is exposed to the elements it’s important to look after your exterior woodwork. Applying a polyurethane lacquer with a paint brush will protect the wood from chemicals, abrasions, scuffing and scratches.

  • Step 4. Choose the best painting equipment

Good quality paint brushes and rollers make your painting job quicker and easier. After you’ve cleaned them properly, they’ll be ready to use for your next D.I.Y. job.
  • Step 5. Keep your painted surfaces clean

After painting, you can keep your home looking great for longer with a little maintenance. A regular clean with a high-pressure hose will keep it looking good but make sure the pressure isn’t too high. You can also use a garden hose, a broom and a bucket of soapy water on walkways and your exterior wooden walls to keep them clean.

  • Step 6. Look after your woodwork

Looking after your exterior woodwork will help it last longer. In high-traffic areas such as walkways and handrails, use a wire brush to get rid of any flaky material on the wood and wipe it clean with a damp cloth. Applying a clear varnish lacquer every two years with a paint brush will protect the wood.
