Get summertime ready

Summer is officially here, it’s now we all wish we had a swimming pool (or neighbours that do). When the sun’s out in force, we just want to get out there and enjoy it, but you don’t want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere without supplies. Here are a few essentials to get you sorted.

Ship-shape shade

Aussie sun can do damage not to mention it can be quite painful if you get burnt. Protecting yourself, your friends and family with good shade is key to a good summer.

Let’s start with the classic beach umbrella. For up to three people, a colourful beach brolly is a superb idea. It’s small enough to carry around, affordable, pops up easily and look great too.

One up from the beach umbrella and better for gusty surf breaks is a beach shelter with sides to protect from the sun and wind. These come in varying sizes for larger groups, they’re lightweight and handy when it comes to keeping the sand at bay.

If you’re up for a beach party or have a large family, you can’t go past a gazebo as a beach tent. You might have one in your shed already, but bear in mind these aren’t great when the wind picks up and it pays to stock up on large sand pegs.

Up your beach game

Take your backyard cricket to the waterfront, set up a volleyball net in the sand or fly a kite. You can go all out and get a stand-up paddle board or surfboard, but even the humble frisbee or footie game provides hours of summer entertainment and gets everyone socialising.

Prep the perfect picnic

Long days of sports and swimming is bound to work up an appetite. Fish and chips are a favourite but there isn’t always a shop nearby. Beach picnics are fun for snacking, you just need a good chilly bin and a rug.

The next port of call is a portable barbecue and fold down table. Snags by the beach are a crowd-pleaser and who knows, you might even meet a hungry fisherman who’s keen to combine forces and flame grill the catch of the day.

Wherever you’re off to this summer, whether it’s your neighbour’s pool or the best beach break – here’s to sorting your setup and getting amongst it.
