Kitchen renovation guide part 3: build your new kitchen

The build stage is the most exciting part of the project – it’s when all your planning and preparation pays off, and you get to see your new kitchen come together.

Cabinet assembly and installation

While the provided instructions will outline each step required to assemble your cabinetry, it’s good to keep an eye on little things such as ensuring panels are flush before they’re screwed together; and to not over tighten the screws and risk splitting the panels.

When it comes to installation, make sure the floor is level and the walls behind the cabinetry is ready so you don’t have to remove the cabinets at a later stage.

Installing doors and panels

When installing doors and panels, stick to the same rule of thumb as cabinet assembly: follow the instructions to the letter and all should go according to plan.

These helpful hints will make the job that little bit faster and easier:

  • Use a rubber mallet or a soft-faced hammer to help get tight-fitting panels such as kickboards into place, without damaging the surface.
  • Position the screw in the middle of the hole on the door’s mounting plate. This will allow you to make small adjustments to its position as you fit the door, making it easier to achieve the correct fit.
  • Buy a handle-drilling template. This will help you precisely position your door handles – avoiding the risk of drilling a hole in the wrong place and creating irreversible damage.
  • Double check you have all the tools you need for the job before you start work.

    Benchtop installation

Unless you’ve successfully installed a benchtop before, or can call on the skills of a friend or family member who has, it’s recommended you leave the job in the hands of a qualified installer. By using our trusted suppliers to install your benchtop, this key component of your new kitchen will be correctly and safely installed.

If you are confident in your installation abilities, you’ll find detailed D.I.Y. installation guides for the Kaboodle benchtop range on our Customised Benchtops page or in our D.I.Y. Advice.

    Appliance installation

In most cases appliance installation is the domain of qualified tradespeople. When dealing with any electrical, gas or utility connections, your personal safety must be the priority. So unless you are a qualified tradesperson, leave it to the experts. Also, think about warranty issues – some appliance manufacturers state that their product must be professionally installed.

    Kitchen care and maintenance

Generally, multi-purpose cleaners are effective at cleaning the majority of kitchen surfaces. However it’s advisable to check the manufacturer’s care and maintenance guidelines before using any product, just to be sure it won’t potentially damage the surface.

In terms of ongoing maintenance in the kitchen, think about things like filters in dishwashers and rangehoods. Cleaning or replacing these periodically will help keep your appliances in good working order. It’s also a good idea to occasionally check and, if necessary, tighten items such as handles and latches.
