Project Overview

Give your kitchen a new lease of life by turning an old benchtop into a stylish concrete benchtop. This easy-to-follow guide shows you the tools and equipment you need to create the modern concrete look, without the expense. Continue to step-by-step instructions

Step by Step Instructions

1 Tape around the benchtop
2 Rough up your benchtop surface
3 Clean the benchtop
4 Apply Bondcrete to the benchtop
5 Mix the concrete render
6 Apply the render to the benchtop
7 Sand the first coat of render
8 Apply the second coat of render
9 Sand the second coat
10 Clean the benchtop
11 Apply the sealant
  • Step 1. Tape around the benchtop

To protect the walls around the benchtop, mask-up the edges with painters tape to stop them from getting concrete on them or from being scratched.

  • Step 2. Rough up your benchtop surface

Run the sander across all of your benchtop several times to rough up its surface. This helps the concrete render to stick to the benchtop.
  • Step 3. Clean the benchtop

To make sure the benchtop is clean, wipe it down with water and sugar soap to clean all of the dust from it. Let it dry before you start the next step.

  • Step 4. Apply Bondcrete to the benchtop

Using a paintbrush, apply Bondcrete to the entire benchtop, including the sides. This will also help the concrete render stick to the benchtop.

  • Step 5. Mix the concrete render

Put on your rubber gloves and dust mask. Follow the instructions on the packaging and mix the concrete render in a large bucket using the cordless drill with the mixing attachment.
  • Step 6. Apply the render to the benchtop

Using the trowel or your widest scraper, spread the concrete render across the entire benchtop, including the sides. Try to keep the render as smooth and level as possible. Let the render dry.
  • Step 7. Sand the first coat of render

Put on the dust mask and gloves. Use the handheld power sander to make the first coat of render smooth. Then wipe it down with a wet sponge to get rid of the dust.

  • Step 8. Apply the second coat of render

Put on the gloves and dust mask, then mix up another batch of conrete render. Use the trowel or your widest scraper to apply the second coat of render to the benchtop. Again, try to keep the surface as smooth as possible. Let the second coat dry.

  • Step 9. Sand the second coat

Put on the dust mask and gloves. Use the handheld sander to sand the second coat of render. Make sure you also sand the sides of the benchtop, so that everywhere is smooth and flat.

  • Step 10. Clean the benchtop

Still wearing the safety gloves and dust mask, use the vacuum cleaner to get rid of all of the dust on the benchtop.

  • Step 11. Apply the sealant

Put on your safety gloves, glasses and the dust mask. Pour the sealant into a small painter’s bucket. Using a paintbrush evenly apply the sealant onto the entire benchtop, including the sides. Let the sealant dry before placing anything on top of it.
