1. Put your gloves on

For this project you’ll need to wear gloves. So before starting on your tiling, put them on.

2. Select your tile

We chose a tile that’s just the right size for a coaster, but you could select a larger tile. You could even use a piece of timber.

3. Glue and grout

A good tip is to use a product called glue and grout. It’s handy because it means you don’t need to grout the tiles separately so it’s much easier to use. Remember, it will dry pretty quickly so you might want to do a section at a time.

4. Apply the glue and grout

Spread the glue and grout onto the tile. Then using your spatula evenly distribute it across the surface.

5. Get creative with the tiles

Let your imagination run wild! Think about your designs. Try a border with some different coloured tiles, make a flower, the sun, or even a heart for mum. We made a rainbow. Press each tile firmly into the grout. It’s a good idea to leave a nice, white gap between each tile.

6. Work in sections

Do a section at a time. Add more glue and grout and continue putting your tiles in place.

7. Finishing touches

Once you’ve laid all the tiles, be sure to push them gently into place so they don’t move.

8. Leave to dry

Set the tile aside and leave it to dry for 24 hours. Clean any excess glue and grout with warm, soapy water.

9. Admire your work

Display your coaster in the lounge. It’s ready for use and you can admire your handiwork!
