Tools and materials needed to make a cactus rock pot

1. Choose your rock

First and most importantly, choose a rock. Pick one that has a good shape and looks a bit like a cactus.

2. Paint your rock

Choose any type of acrylic paint you’ve got at home. We used a chubby paint stick, which is easy to use and makes less mess. Choose a colour that you think will look cool for your cactus. It’s best to make sure your rock is clean and dry before you start painting. Make sure you paint your rock completely. Once you’ve done that set it aside and leave it to dry.

3. Get your pot ready

While you wait for the rock to dry, it’s a good time to get your terracotta pot ready. It’s likely to have a hole in the bottom. Cover this with some tape as this will stop any sand spilling out.

4. Fill the pot with sand

Fill your pot with sand. This will hold your rock cactus in place when you plant it.

5. Draw on the thorns

When your rock is dry, it’s time to draw on some prickly-looking thorns. Use your sharpie to do this. We drew them in a cool v-shape, but you could try different shapes. You’ll need to cover your rock completely with these.

6. Add some googly eyes

Give your cactus some love by adding some human personality with googly eyes. Glue them on with craft glue.

7. Plant your cactus

Push your finished cactus firmly into the sand to plant it. Create one for the entire family – Mum Rocks, Dad Rocks or even the whole Family Rocks! Then to really make your cactus rock garden pop, add some decorative rocks around the top of the sand. And you’re done!
