Keep your drinks handy while you relax on the couch with this clever couch cup holder. You can make one for each end of your couch and any armchairs that you might have. Just follow these basic steps.
Step 1: Measure Armrest
Grab your tape measure and work out the width of your couch’s armrest.
Step 2: Cut Timber
Choose your hardwood timber and get it cut to size at Bunnings or do it yourself. You will need three pieces, a top section to rest your cup on and two sidepieces to slide around your armrest. The sidepieces should be the same length and generally shorter than the top piece but it’s entirely up to you.
Handy Tip: Make sure you add the height of the timber to each end of the length for the top piece so that it overhangs on your couch. This will ensure a snug fit over your armrest.
Step 3: Sand
Next, sand down the timber with fine-grain sandpaper using your sanding block. Sand with the grain of the wood, not against it. Then wipe it clean with a dust cloth.
Step 4: Add Brackets
Take your pencil and mark out the screw holes for the brackets on the ends of your timber. Then drill in the holes and screw in the brackets.
Step 5: Varnish
Using your varnish brush, apply two to three coats of timber varnish, leaving it to dry overnight between each coat.
Handy Tip: When using varnish, make sure that your workspace is well ventilated.
Step 6: Mount
Once you’re happy with the look, slide the finished couch cup holder over the armrest and you’re done. Now all you have to do is grab a cuppa, sit back and relax.
