How to cover hinges and screws when painting

When you’re painting, sometimes it’s hard to avoid getting paint on screws or hinges. An easy way to fix this is by applying a little Vaseline. Then it doesn’t matter if they get smeared with paint because you can just wipe the Vaseline away, leaving you with a nice clean finish.

Step by Step Instructions

1 Attach the handles
2 Clean the cabinet
3 Drill the holes for the handle
4 Fix the cabinet to the wall
5 Paint the cabinet
6 Putty up any holes or cracks
7 Remove handles and hardware
  • Step 1. Attach the handles

Once the paint has dried, use the screwdriver and screws to attach the handle to the cabinet
  • Step 2. Clean the cabinet

It’s important to make sure the cabinet is clean before you paint it. To do this, mix sugar soap in a bucket of water and scrub the cabinet clean with a sponge, making sure you remove all the grease and grime.
  • Step 3. Drill the holes for the handle

Use a pencil to mark where you would like the handle for the cabinet to go. Use a cordless drill to make two holes. Use a cloth to wipe away any dust on the cabinet.
  • Step 4. Fix the cabinet to the wall

Fix the cabinet to the wall
  • Step 5. Paint the cabinet

Mix the chalkboard paint thoroughly with a paint stirrer. Then paint the cabinet all over with your paintbrush. After the first coat dries, apply the second coat and even a third if required. For quick results, chalkboard paint also comes in an aerosol can.
  • Step 6. Putty up any holes or cracks

Use a putty knife to fill any holes or cracks in the cabinet with putty. Overfill the holes and wait until the putty has dried. Then put on your safety glasses, dust mask and ear muffs to sand the putty back until it’s smooth and level with the cabinet surface.
  • Step 7. Remove handles and hardware

Use a screwdriver to remove any handles or hardware from the cabinet.
