Project Overview

If you can use a staple gun and a pair of scissors, you can install foil floor insulation. We’ll teach you the basic steps involved when installing two different types. You will learn how to staple the foil into place and trim it properly. Plus we’ll show you how to overlap pleated foil to ensure the best performance.
Continue to step-by-step instructions

Step by Step Instructions

1 Install roll out foil floor insulation
2 Install pleated foil floor insulation
  • Step 1. Install roll out foil floor insulation

Roll the insulation along the gap between two joists and cut it to length. Then staple it all the way along the face of one joist. The edge of the foil should sit just below the top of the joist. Now tighten the foil across the gap and staple the other side the same way. When you install in a narrow gap, cut off any excess with scissors.
  • Step 2. Install pleated foil floor insulation

Because pleated foil insulation comes in short, expandable lengths, it is easier to install under a pre-existing floor. Simply open the pleats out and staple each piece into the joists. Then install the next piece with a 100mm overlap. As with the foil roll, keep the foil as close to the top of the joist as possible. Because it’s expandable, there’s no need to trim it when installing across a narrow gap.
