Hero plant this month: Citrus
Whether it’s lemons, limes or oranges, every backyard should have at least one citrus tree.
Plant in a pot or in the garden. To get your citrus tree established, remove flowers and fruit for the first couple of years to let the tree grow strong branches. Once established, citrus are an asset with their glossy foliage, fragrant flowers and the added bonus of producing beautiful fruit. Don’t forget they are heavy feeders, so use a decent citrus fertiliser and keep your tree well-watered in the summer
What else to plant
February is a good time to be planting star jasmine (Trachelspermum jasminoides). It’s super easy to train it along a lattice or leave it to its own devices as a ground cover. With its glossy green leaves, and beautiful star-shaped, fragrant flowers throughout the spring and summer months, this is a hero of the garden.
Another good option for planting this month is lavender. With its fragrant flowers and foliage, it works well in a border, as a feature or plant in a pot. There are many different varieties, and a range of flower colours from purple, through to white, pink and even green.
February is a great time to continue successional planting of edibles. Plant beans, carrots, lettuces and courgettes.

Water the garden regularly, pots particularly tend to dry out quickly, so ensure these are kept moist. Add a wetting agent to the lawn, as this will help it retain moisture.
A blooming garden is likely to attract the attention of pests so keep a regular watch out for these. Keep aphids, white fly and scale at bay with a suitable spray. If you’re unsure about what to use, pop into store and get some advice from one of our experts.
Harvest
There are lots of things to be harvesting in February. Pick broccoli, celery, kale, strawberries, which are delicious straight from the bush, and cabbage
With plenty of glorious summer days to come, it’s the perfect time to get out into the garden and really enjoy it.
