Continue to step-by-step instructions

Step by Step Instructions

1 Choose the right floor covering
2 Keep the sand out
3 Keep the floor clean
4 Stop floors from getting scratched
5 Protect your floor from UV light
  • Step 1. Choose the right floor covering

It’s important to have the right floor covering in a beach house, one that can handle the outdoors coming inside. Carpet is far from ideal. Sand will sink into it and it will be hard to clean. Hardwood timber, tile and laminate floors are ideal for beach houses. They’re hard-wearing, long-lasting and easy to clean.

  • Step 2. Keep the sand out

No matter what kind of flooring you have in your beach house, the best way to protect it is by keeping the sand out of it. Sand is abrasive and damages floors. The simplest way to do this, is place the right kind of doormat at every entrance for people to wipe their feet before they enter.

  • Step 3. Keep the floor clean

There are a wide-range of floor cleaners that are ideal for hardwood, laminate and tile floors. With its swivel head, microfibre mops are great at cleaning up dust, dirt and sand, even from under furniture. The microfibre mop can also be used on laminate floors. Spray the laminate cleaner on and wipe it off with the mop. It will give you a clean finish every time.

  • Step 4. Stop floors from getting scratched

As well as sand, the legs of chairs and tables can scratch and permanently damage your floors. The easiest way to prevent this is by putting adhesive felt protectors on the bottom of the legs of the chairs and tables. There is a wide-range of protectors to choose from, depending on the size of the chair and table legs.

  • Step 5. Protect your floor from UV light

Sunlight is very damaging to hardwood floors. It causes the colour to fade and the wood to degrade. The best way to stop this is by closing all of the blinds and curtains during the day, and whenever you’re away from your beach house.
