Step by Step Instructions

1 The Design
2 Planning your design
3 Choose your fixtures and finishes
4 Think about your shower
5 Don’t forget storage space
6 Add a personal touch
  • Step 1. The Design

Our original bathroom had an outdated 70’s look and needed some love. Working to a limited budget and by keeping things simple, we’ve achieved a new look that ties together natural finishes with a neutral colour palette and some little luxuries like under tile heating.

The natural lighting in the bathroom is an important feature. By adding a skylight, you can create a relaxing vibe as well as make a small bathroom seem bigger by illuminating any dark corners.
  • Step 2. Planning your design

When it comes to planning your new bathroom, start by thinking about what your needs are. Is a shower enough or is a bath important as well? A beautiful freestanding bath can even become the hero of the room.

Once you have a plan, make sure your budget covers fixtures, fittings, flooring and wall materials, taps and basins, shower hardware and storage. Then before you tackle your bathroom renovation, make sure you also watch our D.I.Y. Reno Basics Video.
  • Step 3. Choose your fixtures and finishes

Now you can head into your local Bunnings and choose your fixtures, colours and textures for your bathroom. For example, you can experiment with tile patterns if you don’t like the timber look. We laid our floor tiles from floor to ceiling to create a modern look with a seamless backdrop. Bunnings also has a large range of vanities in our bathroom displays to suit whatever your storage and layout needs are. And you have to check out the huge wall of taps. Whether it’s matte black or the classic chrome look, you’ll find what you need.
  • Step 4. Think about your shower

There’s a lot to consider when choosing a shower. Depending on the design and space of your bathroom, you can choose a double, single or even a corner shower. Your local Bunnings will have a great range of displays to help you decide. Another good idea is to match the frame and trim of the shower with the rest of the bathroom. For the shower screen, if you’re limited on space, a sliding door is a good, practical choice.
  • Step 5. Don’t forget storage space

There’s no need to compromise your style by adding clever storage. A mirrored shaving cabinet adds hidden storage to your bathroom. Timber or tile niches above the bath and towel racks look great and help store your bathroom essentials. Whereas a floating vanity can perfectly complement the modern style of the bathroom without taking up too much room.
  • Step 6. Add a personal touch

And there you have it, everything you need to create a light filled modern bathroom. We’ve created a D.I.Y timber vanity that compliments the whole look and has the added bonus that you’ve made it yourself.
