Project Overview

Unblocking a toilet is simple and quick when you know how. We show you how to use a plunger to loosen the blockage. Then we use an auger to push the blockage through so it can be flushed away.
Continue to step-by-step instructions

Step by Step Instructions

1 Unblock using the plunger
2 Unblock using the auger
  • Step 1. Unblock using the plunger

The first thing to do is try the plunger. Put gloves on and place the plunger right into the base of the toilet bowl. Plunge up and down. Plunging will work well on small blockages. In this instance it has loosened a bit of the blockage, but we will need to use the auger to remove it completely.

  • Step 2. Unblock using the auger

Push the shaft of the auger down the toilet until you get to the blockage. Tie off the pin to hold the auger in place and spin it around until it grabs the blockage. The auger will push the blockage further down the pipe until it’s released or it will cling onto the blockage and bring it back up the pipe. In this example the auger has pushed the blockage through. Now reel it back in and flush the toilet.
