 Flowers to Sow

Lift dahlia tubers and gladioli corms. Store in a dry place. Prepare new garden beds for roses with a good compost and base fertiliser such as Thrive granular All Purpose Plant Food.
 Vegies to Sow
Control slugs and snails with Yates Baysol, which lasts longer under wet conditions. Sow broad beans. Any vacant garden areas can be sown in a cover crop.  Sow lupin, barley or oats. Continue to protect vegies from pests and diseases with Yates Target, Champ DP or Guardall.
 May Pruning
Tidy up flowers and summer vegies. Prune shrubs that have finished flowering. Trim or prune back any vigorous growing perennials to allow smaller plants room to grow.
 Fertilising in May

Use Yates Nitrosol Organic liquid fertiliser regularly to speed up winter vegetable growth.  Boost lawn growth by applying Sulphate of Ammonia.  It will also suppress weed growth.

 May Projects

This is the season for making compost. Collect autumn leaves as they are great for composting.  Make sure however that they are not diseased or host to insect pests.

While planning a new garden, think about installing an irrigation system. It will help to conserve water in the summer, and just by turning on the tap will give you extra time to sit and relax without having to hold the garden hose, or shift the sprinkler in summer time!
