 Flowers

Remove any summer annuals that are past their best. Cut back summer flowering perennials. Plant the last of the spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils and jonquils. Side dress the garden with Thrive granular All Purpose Plant Food or Bio-Gold pellets.
 Vegies to Sow
Broad beans, which are a useful soil improver, can be planted now. The plants may need some support. Onions can also be sown now. Don’t plant too deeply, just cover the roots and the base of the stem.
 April Pruning
Prune and tidy day lilies, Easter daisies, lavender, phlox and other perennials that have finished flowering.
Cut back geraniums with diseased leaves.
If silverleaf is a problem, prune stonefruit trees now.  Paint Yates Bacseal onto any large wounds or cuts.
 Fertilising in April
Feed newly established shrubs and trees with organic pellets.  Use Yates Magamp in the planting hole to give 2 years of feeding and to help establish a healthy root system.
 April Projects

Planting trees and shrubs in April is a good idea. It is one of the best months to get plants established before the heavy wet weather, and for the plant to adjust to its new position before the hot summer months.  Stake new trees if needed.

Seed of the Month

Pansies

Come in a wide colour range, but can be distinguished by velvety black markings. They should be sown in partial sunlight until sturdy enough for planting out-when they prefer sunlight for most of the day.

Water Saving Tip

Choose plants that have good drought tolerance.  Look for plants with small, hard or hairy leaves.
